Banco de Portugal Updates Consumer Lending Interest Rate Ceilings
The central bank adjusted the legal maximum annual percentage rates (TAEG) for consumer credit contracts, directly impacting pricing models across personal loans and credit cards.
The Banco de Portugal has released the revised interest rate caps (taxas máximas) governing consumer loan contracts. Under the latest quarterly adjustment, credit cards, open lines of credit, and bank overdraft limits see a minor upward shift in their maximum allowable interest ceilings. Conversely, car leasing agreements have registered a small structural decrease in their maximum TAEG thresholds. Risk departments at financial lenders must ensure that no new retail finance products issued breach these updated macroprudential limits.
